Description

This book is intended to complement available texts on accommodation and housekeeping management and supervision. It provides a general introduction to the subject area previously known as "premises and plant", but broadens it to include a wide spectrum of matters both theoretical and practical, associated with the provision of buildings for hospitality. The aim is to combine this knowledge with a sound appreciation of the day to day running of premises.;Chapters one and two outline conventions, methods, procedures and terminology. They begin by looking at the purposes of building, the roles of professionals and officials involved in constructional matters and conventions of communications. Issues related to building design, legislation and the process of building are then discussed.;Chapters three to seven describe principles associated with the construction and servicing of premises. A straightforward delineation of general principles is adopted, but reference is also made to details with which the accommodation operative can be expected to be familiar.;Subsequent chapters look at the more practical aspects of maintenance organization together with guidelines for the operation of leisure facilities. These areas are now frequently linked to residential accommodation and may therefore, come under the umbrella of the hotel manager's responsibilities.;Many specialist books deal with the topics included here in much greater detail. The aim is to produce a background against which these may be understood, if further information is required.;Reference to legislation is tackled in terms of principle other than detail. Building Regulations, for instance are constantly revised and it is important to note their purpose, content and operation, rather than to make a list which may well be superseded within a few months.;The book is aimed, primarily, at students of hotel and catering supervision and management - BTEC, CNAA courses. It should also prove useful as a reference for managers of leisure facilities and those people wishing to or who are already manning a "hospitality style" business which involves the occupation of premises.
