Description

In this 1997 edition the places to visit and places to stay have been revised to include London and Birmingham and they now include phone numbers for all the churches listed, as so many are now locked.;The reading list has been revised and updated to include the new books published for the 1996 Morris centenary.;The book contains unique information and illustrations, not found elsewhere, like Morris's painting "Beata Domina" and his bill for Burne-Jones's Star of Bethlehem tapestry. Most of the illustrations were photographed specially for the book. They include close-up details of Morris textiles and stained glass by Morris, Burne-Jones, Madox Brown and Rossetti, a settee by Madox Brown and a Burne-Jones tile and drawing for the Kelmscott Chaucer.;The book also features new information about "The Adoration of the Magi" tapestry. Separate illustrated sections cover the Oxford Union paintings, Red House embroideries, printed and woven textiles, the "Earthly Paradise" illustrations, the "Briar Rose", and Kelmscott Press. It includes five close-up details of plant patterns in textiles (describing Morris's use of vegetable dyes).;The text pages have decorative Morris borders. The "places to visit" section lists 50 places to visit from Stroud to Windsor, including Kelmscott Manor, Oxford colleges and museums and places in the Cotswolds and Chilterns, London and Birmingham. It also identifies the artists who designed each of the figures in the windows.;For ease of reading, the book is divided into short sections, and includes a glossary and a plan of Oxford. The colour illustrations are also available in two postcard books with eight cards each, which students can order to illustrate their projects - "A William Morris Postcard Book" and "A Burne-Jones Postcard Book". The postcards may also be purchased individually from Heritage Press.;The text should appeal to the general reader, as well as students - suitable for the National Curriculum in art and history (art at all Key Stages and history at Key Stage 2).
