The Monster Hunter series has been a cult favourite among fans of Japanese games for the decade and a half since it first graced Nintendo consoles back in 2004, but it wasn't until it made the leap to the more powered-up Xbox One and PS4 with 2018's Monster Hunter World that it became a mainstream hit. You might be forgiven, then, for worrying that its return to Nintendo with Monster Hunter Rise on the Switch that it might be returning to its more esoteric ways. You needn't have. The work that was done to make this monster hunting RPG accessible on Sony and Microsoft's consoles has been built on here, with Rise offering as lush and lavish a game as Capcom has ever made. There are numerous tweaks and improvements to the Monster Hunter formula in Rise, but the headline is arguably the fact that instead of starting the game as a scrawny underdog, you're thrust right in as an overpowered hero going straight for the big bads. You'll be able to tackle the new signature monster Magnamalo when in previous games you'd still be scurrying around doing fetch quests. Hunts are faster, too, shifting the emphasis from stamina and endurance to skill thanks to your much more dynamic profile. Similarly, while the map is one continuous environment as in World, getting around is quicker, too. The Wirebug grappling system allows you to throw yourself from point to point, while the canine mounts known as Palamutes let you ride around in style (the incredible raft of customisation options certainly helps!) and track more easily with the input of your eagle-eyed Cohoot pal (an owl companion, essentially). The Wirebug finds its way into combat, too, building on the mounting system from previous games that allows you to scale and then control monsters as well as combining with weapons in interesting ways. In a nutshell, Monster Hunter Rise takes the formula and makes it bigger, faster and more dynamic, and that's no bad thing.
