Monster Hunter Stories has always been, to some degree, the friendly younger brother to the core Monster Hunter series. The art style is softer and more cartoony. And while you certainly do take out monsters, the core premise in Stories has you taming, raising and understanding 'monsties' as their friend and team captain rather than their antagonist. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection does, however, add a greater level of sophistication than we've seen in previous iterations of the spin-off. Combat, while still turn-based and still containing a bit of a rock/paper/scissors element, now leans more on the quality of your loadout and how well studied you are about the monster you're tackling. Meanwhile, the visuals (while still retaining their cel-shaded style) are richer and more mature than those of previous games. The narrative has a bit more going on, too. You're the heir or heiress to a well-to-do kingdom. You ride a Skyscale Rathalos, a cursed wyvern with a twin that was stolen away by your traitorous mother. Further afield, a weird plague that turns everything it touches to crystal is ravaging the environment, and a chain of events drags you into the fray. Kingdoms fight over ever scarcer resources, kings and queens bicker and feud, Guilds squeeze the commoners, and the world around them just keeps getting sicker. Sound familiar? Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection moves things up and along, and while it's a satisfying evolution for existing Monster Hunter fans, it's also a great place for newcomers looking for a meaty RPG to jump in.
