Half a decade ago Monster Hunter wasn't exactly obscure, but it was a bit of a niche concern. Now you can barely look at a screen without seeing Monster Hunter content of some stripe or other. That's partly due to the success of Rise, but it's also down to the Nintendo Switch hit that is Monster Hunter Stories. It's back for a second instalment, marrying the feel of the Monster Hunter series with the mechanics of a turn-based JRPG in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. You play as Red, the grandson of a legendary Rider. That means you're in the business of forging friendly bonds with monsters affectionately known as monsties so that you can (you already guessed this part) ride them around and fight alongside them. Things kick off when you encounter a Wyverian girl called Ena who's been entrusted with an egg that could hatch into a legendary Rathalos, with potentially destructive consequences. A few things have been changed this time out. One is that the random factor has been taken out of fights, meaning you'll no longer find a monster suddenly attacking out of character and messing up your strategy. Another is that the art style has been matured slightly, with characters looking a bit less like chibos and a bit more in-proportion. The biggie, though, is arguably that monster breeding has been taken out of the end game and incorporated into the main story. It was just too much fun to make people wait for!
