Churchill's doctor - Richard Lovell

This biography tells of the life and times of Charles McMoran Wilson, a doctor who was central to developments in medicine in the middle years of the 20th century. He had a Victorian childhood, lived as a medical student in London in the Edwardian era, and served as a medical officer in France during World War I. He emerged an idealist, often prickly, with burning ambitions that tended to conflict with his need to earn a living in medical practice.;As Dr Charles Wilson, he became widely known as Churchill's doctor. By the time he was associated with Churchill in 1940 he had already rebuilt his old medical school at St Mary's Hospital, contibuted to ideas on medical education and was in demand to give lectures to the armed services on morale and courage.;Lord Moran became the longest-serving President of the Royal College of Physicians of London in the last 100 years. In that post, he influenced the development of the National Health Service. The book recounts the story of the conflict that arose between his loyalties to his often itinerant patient during the war and to his duties as president of the college.;Lord Moran always wanted to be a writer, not a doctor. He wrote "Anatomy of Courage", published in 1945 (and still in print in the USA). The publication of "The Stuggle for Survival", soon after Churchill's death, aroused a storm of criticism.
