Pero aun no hemos concluido con Salazar de Men doza. Acababamos el periodo antecedente cuando llego a nuestras manos la Monarquia de Espana, obra del mis mo autor, que habiendo sido escrita por el poco antes de 4600, censurada dos veces, la primera en 4604 y la segunda de orden del Consejo en 4603, y solicitada su impresion en varias ocasiones por el propio Salazar; pri mera en Aranjuez ante el Sr. D. Felipe III el ano 4644; segunda, en 4648; y la tercera, posteriormente en el reinado del Sr. D. Felipe IV, (como todo consta del com pendio o memorial con que empieza) no fue posible lo grarse tal intento en vida de unos Reyes que fueron grandemente protectores de las letras.
