Synge's great tragi-comedy The Playboy of the WesternWorld caused a riot at its performance in 1907. Although their insistence on 'the fundamental realities of life' might no longer be felt adequate cause for public disorder, his plays continue to provoke a heart-felt respnse from their audiences. A controversial figure in his own, with Yeats and Lady Gregory, founded the Irish National Society (now the Abbey Theatre), Synge runs the range of human emotion in his drama and poems.
