Description

Documentary that explores the tensions underlying Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. While the event appeared to run smoothly from the outside, a number of historians argue that the coronation became a focus for the conflict between Prince Philip, who wanted to modernise the monarchy, and traditionalists such as the Queen Mother. Against the advice of old heads including Winston Churchill, Elizabeth agreed that the coronation could be broadcast in its entirety on television and thus paved the way for a relationship with the mass media that would grow beyond her control as the century progressed.
