Academy Award-nominated documentary about avant-garde Japanese painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko. When the couple first met in New York while Ushio was struggling to establish himself in the American market, Noriko abandoned her own work and education to become wife and assistant to the fascinating and controversial artist. Now, after 40 years of marriage, the couple still live in New York but it is Noriko who is finally finding success and recognition with her comics depicting the tumultuous relationship the pair have come through. Film-maker Zachary Heinzerling follows the couple in their day-to-day lives and gains an insight into the complexities of their relationship and how their roles within it have changed over the years. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary.
