After beautiful young thief Desiree sees her elderly guardian (and mentor in crime) executed for a murder he didn't commit, she vows to avenge his unjust death. Ironically, lawman Nicholas Grimshaw promised this condemned man that after his execution, Nicholas would take on the role of Desiree's new guardian and protector; now, he must make good on his promise. Quickly curing Desiree of her thieving ways, Nicholas proceeds to fall in love with her, and she with him. He helps her in her quest for the real murderer, as she sleuths around the town. But soon, Desiree's investigations stir up the ire of a ruthless enemy who is hell-bent on purloining a vast inheritance before Desiree can expose her. Suddenly, Desiree is framed for a new, second murder. In an eleventh-hour intervention, Nicholas tries to save Desiree from hanging.
