For the past several hundred years Ireland has been almost exclusively described in feminine terms: the Weeping Woman; the Black Rose; the Old Woman with the Harp; Mother Ireland. From the 1st century BC through to the present day Irish women have fought on battlefields alongside their male counterparts, led revolutions, fought for human rights and written seminal works.
