Death of a chancellor - David Dickinson

Compton Minster is preparing to celebrate 1000 years of Christian worship, but just weeks before the official ceremony its chancellor dies in mysterious circumstances. When no one, bar the doctor and undertaker, is allowed to view the corpse, the dead man's sister suspects foul play and asks Lord Francis Powerscourt to investigate. It soon emerges that the chancellor was one of England's richest men. Pacing the cloisters, Powerscourt starts to suspect that the cathedral itself is harbouring a terrible secret, and when a chorister is found turning on a spit the pressure is on. Powerscourt himself escapes death by a whisker, and his wife, Lady Lucy, is also at risk of her life before the astonishing secret of Compton Minster is uncovered and the murderer unmasked.
