Samurai Shodown Neogeo Collection is truly a piece of gaming history. Let's start with the obvious - it brings together all the mainline Samurai Shodown games ever released on NeoGeo, five stone-cold-classic sword-based sidescrolling beat-'em-ups: Samurai Shodown Samurai Shodown II Samurai Shodown III Samurai Shodown IV Samurai Shodown V These are, themselves, important pieces of gaming history brought together for the first time, some of SNK's most masterful fighters. Beyond that, however, is a game that has literally only ever been seen by a handful of people since it was made: Samurai Shodown V Perfect (or 'Samurai Shodown V Special', depending on who you ask). The story goes that this was a collaboration between SNK USA and Yuki Enterprise, made (and finished) without the go-ahead from SNK Japan and canned before it ever saw the light of day as a result. Now, for the first time ever, this secret game from the annals of gaming history is available to play, complete with its original story mode and balancing tweaks (both were made at the time, mind you). There's more, though. Vying for top billing among the real retro geeks, is the digital Samurai Shodown museum which chronicles the development and evolution of the series. It brings together obscura such as arcade flyers, concept art and design documents never seen in public before. It's fascinating stuff for anyone interested in games, but for Samurai Shodown fans and those interested in early games development it's absolute gold.
