Dragon Quest III HD-2D is walking an extremely fine line - it's a remake of a game from the late 1980s that has to appeal to older gamers' nostalgia while offering enough modern conveniences to get newcomers aboard. Fortunately, it has plenty to offer both camps. The original is truly beloved, marking the start of the Erdrick Trilogy, the first three games of the mainline Dragon Quest series. The first thing you'll notice, of course, are the lovely HD-2D graphics. They're retro and ultra-modern all at once, and they absolutely pop. It's kind of like playing a really retro game the way you remember it, rather than the way it really was. Plus, features such as auto-save, objective markers and a simpler teleport system make it a little more accessible, while new monster battle arenas and the Monster Wrangler class bring something new for fans of the original. The game follows the child of Ortega, a great hero who set out years ago to defeat the villainous Archfiend, Baramos. Ortega failed, and Baramos still threatens the world. Now it's on you to gather a team of companions and set out on an epic quest to save the world.
