It doesn't REALLY matter that Cris Tales was made in Columbia - it's still a sweet-hearted JRPG through and through. You play as Crisbell, an ordinary young girl living an ordinary life at an ordinary orphanage when pop! a frog in a top hat appears and she discovers she's a time mage and gets a magic sword. From there you're basically off to the races. The standout feature of Cris Tales, as you can probably guess if you've seen a screenshot, is the warmth and charm of its world, no small part of which comes through in the storybook art style. While the whimsy and magic is all JRPG, however, this is an empathetic game that's more concerned with exploited miners than it is royal intrigue. For all that social stuff, though, don't forget that this is a game which has a talking frog in its inciting incident. Like we said, this game is warm and charming from the inside out. The fact you're a time mage comes through in a few ways. It crops up in puzzles, as you might expect, but you also see it as you move about the world. Your screen is divided into three parts, with the middle showing the present but the right showing the future and the left third depicting the past. That means that you'll see NPCs in different stages of life, adding a unique slant to the narrative. Likewise, you can use your temporal abilities in combat. Got a wolf hassling you? Reduce it to a cub. Can't wait for a spell to take effect? Just speed up time. For all the interesting mechanics, however, it's the warmth of Cris Tales that will really make you want to hang around in this world.
