The first half of the first series of this BBC drama. Set against the backdrop of Edwardian London, this BBC drama tells the story of ambitious cook Louisa Leyton. Louisa prepares a banquet for King Edward VII when her head chef, Monsieur Alex, is away on holiday. Her menu is a success; not even the unwelcome romantic attentions of household butler Mr Trotter, or her mother's wish to marry her off to him, can spoil things. Then Major Farjeon requests to see her so that he can explain what royal patronage will mean to a girl like her. Meanwhile, Louisa is left facing financial ruin thanks to her husband and sister-in-law. She must work to repay every penny she owes, but her health begins to fail her. Then, out of the blue, she receives an offer from old flame Charlie Tyrell. As the Liberal Party goes from strength to strength, Louisa hosts the latest by-election victory celebration in her now increasingly successful hotel. A famous couple begin an affair in her hotel but Louisa maintains her discretion. Meanwhile Charlie is finding life as Lord Hazelmere taking its toll.
