The education of statesmen and public servants at one of Oxford's best known colleges is the subject of this well-researched volume. It considers who went to Christ Church between the Restoration and the end of the 18th century, what they were taught, and who taught them. It is primarily concerned with those sections of society which, particularly in the 18th century, governed the country nationally and locally. The meaning of liberal education is discussed and the author suggests that owing to the progressive neglect of scientific studies it lost its comprehensive character and became equated with a classical education.
