Education for empowerment - Christine Callender

Why do some children at multi-ethnic schools want to be taught by black teachers? This book aims to answer this question, with an ethnographic study of six black teachers. The author's analysis of qualitative and quantitive data suggests that there is a possible existence of a specific black teaching style. Although this style may be perceived as "harsh" and "disciplinarian" by outsiders, many children of African-Caribbean heritage find it emancipatory in intent and culturally "connect" with it. Thus for children like these, this type of teaching could be of enormous benefit and represents an important support for learning.
