This new book has been "put together" by two doctors who worked with David Sackett in Oxford, and are based at his former department, the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. Whereas Sackett's book, Evidence Based Medicine, dealt with the theory of how to apply EBM, this new book is an instant reference handbook offering a guide to the evidence based management of major medical problems, and is intended for use by junior doctors or residents.

Each topic covered is the result of a rigorous process of analysis of the available journal articles on the subject, conducted according to the accepted EBM methodology established by Sackett and co-workers. Each topic has been checked by a recognised expert in the field, and reviewed by doctors at centres of excellence in the UK and North America.
