Halle Berry takes the lead role in this biopic of Dorothy Dandridge, the first black woman to win a nomination for the Best Actress Oscar. Although she received great acclaim for such films as 'Carmen Jones' and 'Porgy and Bess', both with director Otto Preminger, Dandridge nevertheless found it hard to succeed in Hollywood, her progress impeded by racism and the offer of stereotypical roles. This film tells her whole story, from her early days working the club circuit, through her success in Hollywood and her high-profile affair with director Preminger (Klaus Maria Brandauer), all the way up to her death by prescription drugs in 1965.
