This book is one of a series covering the four main areas of Home Economics required by the General Certificate of Secondary Education criteria. The series is designed to help the student to develop the skills of decision making and to enable them to recall and apply these skills in different situations. Cross-referencing amongst topics in each individual book and to the other books in the series is designed to satisfy the GCSE aim of bringing out inter-relationships across the four main areas of Home Economics (food, home, textiles and family). This format also allows the books to be used alongside established reference texts and for individual studies and project work.;This particular book attempts to cover the family aspect of the GCSE Home Economics criteria. It is written in short alphabetical topics similar to a catalogue. It includes issues which are sometimes considered personal and sensitive and encourages the students to look at their own lives and investigate issues in a methodical manner. Students are also encouraged to develop information skills. They are shown the importance of obtaining, understanding and using this information when having to make decisions. It is emphasized throughout that although there is rarely a perfect decision, by exercising care, an effort can be made to reach the best solution.
