Chocobo's Dungeon brings the famous and fabulous Square Enix brand of role playing to the Wii. In the game you play Cid, who is accompanied by his trusty Chocobo - one of the giant chicken type birds from the Final Fantasy games. You need to locate the fabled Timeless Power gem to power your Airship. As you search for it you are sucked into a vortex, and end up in the town of Lostime on the island of Memoria, a place which disappeared fifty years ago.
In Lostime there is the Bell of Oblivion. When it rings everyone loses their memory. Cid and his new friend Shirma must recover the lost memories of Lostime's residents. To do this you must battle your way through a series of turn-based battles that take place in randomly generated dungeons. This style of game harks back to the very origins of dungeon games. Moving a single step on the grid, or performing any action counts as a turn, and every monster in the dungeon then gets a turn. You need to consider your position and your actions to make sure you can get out of harms way. The result is like mini games of battle chess. Performing actions or moving takes energy, so you need to keep an eye on Chocobo's food gauge, starvation reduces his health points. If your Chocobo dies, you'll be taken back to the start of the current dungeon.
As you would hope, you can upgrade your weapons and armour at the blacksmith's shop. You can also transfer seals that give your equipment special powers that makes it more capable of dealing with the challenges you face as you progress through the game.
While this is the third Chocobo Dungeon game, it's the first time the series has been available on the Wii, and as you might expect, that makes it a little bit different to any previous version. You control your character using the WiiMote, but you can use the Classic Controller if you prefer. Another first for Final Fantasy Fables, Chocobo's Dungeon is the introduction of the job-changing system that some players may recognize from the Final Fantasy Tactics games. Choosing a different role brings different skills, and will enable you to use different tactics to complete a given dungeon or beat a specific boss.
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon combines traditional turn-based dungeon battle gameplay with tactical elements and characters from the ever popular Final Fantasy universe and wraps it all up in Square Enix's hallmarked quality graphical and musical style.
