Drama directed by Peter Cousens and starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Bernhard Forcher and William Sadler. In 1856, enslaved Samuel Woodward (Gooding Jr.) escapes with his family from a plantation in Virginia. As they travel to Canada with the help of the people known as the Underground Railroad, Samuel seeks a better life for him and his family. His dreams get further away however as they find themselves pursued by a slave hunter named Plimpton (Sadler). As Plimpton gets ever closer, Samuel must decide whether to seek freedom or revenge. 100 years before, Samuel's great-grandfather was imprisoned on a slave ship bound for the fledgling American colonies. The ship was captained by John Newton (Forcher), upon whose shoulders the lives of all on board rested and whose exploits would serve as inspiration to Samuel and many more for years to come.
