Horrified to discover her first cello teacher, Joyce Cruikshank, on her uppers and alone, Sara Selkirk sets Joyce up as the resident music therapist for the wealthy clientele of the Sulis Clinic. The Sulis is run by Dr Stefan Golightly, who believes that the combination of modern medicine, homeopathy and the beautiful surroundings of the historic spa town of Bath constitute the essential wellbeing of body and spirit. Sara's distinguished pianist friend, James Ballantyne, is a patient there, receiving treatment for a painful ulcer. But Sara begins to wonder why James's fellow patients enjoy miraculous returns to health, while Dr Golightly's own brother and sister-in-law seem to linger on the brink of physical and mental collapse. The sudden death of a Japanese tourists sets in motion a train of events which proves that there is far more than meets the eye at the Sulis Clinic.
