War sweeps throughout the kingdom. Hordes of Orcs are invading the land from the North. In order to keep the royal army going the blacksmiths of the land strive constantly over their hot coals, replenishing weapons and forging new ammunition. Those who break the law in these days are punished hard; they are sent into slavery in the mines, to delve deep into the earth and dig out ore for weapons. There are no guards here, there is no need. The entire mining area is surrounded by a magical barrier, a dome a thousand metres in diameter that stretches over the prison reaching through the underground and meeting to a perfect sphere in the depths of the mines. The barrier can be passed from the outside with no effect whatsoever. No living being can pass through from the inside however, only lifeless objects. And things have not gone quite how the king planned - a mutiny has turned the mines into a lawless territory where the most violent prisoners are in control and the kingdom has to deal with them if he wants his ore. Gothic's plot is indeed interesting and involving, to say the least, and this twisted predicament is not your problem, it is just one of them. This is a faithful remake of the original Gothic, and of course that means overhauled visuals for the modern era. It also means a modernised combat system, so while players get all the intrigue and atmosphere of the original, they get a slick contemporary action experience too.
