The developers at Darksiders studio Gunfire Games sure do love an apocalypse. This time the end of the world has come about courtesy of The Root, a bunch of monsters that have burst forth into our reality and more or less ended human civilisation. While Remnant: From the Ashes shares a certain amount of apocalyptic-RPG DNA with Darksiders, however, there are plenty of differences. For one, this action RPG is focused squarely on third-person shoot-'em-up mechanics, and its co-op offering is a big part of play. Level generation is also randomised, and that extends to the way bosses are ordered. Not only does that mean that the landscape is unpredictable when you replay, your abilities can change dramatically because different bosses drop different traits when you kill them. Because of this randomisation, Gunfire Games reckons you only see about 45% of the game's content on a single playthrough and progression feels quite roguelike. Remnant: From the Ashes also invites a certain amount of comparison to Dark Souls (what doesn't, these days?) thanks to its punishing difficulty curve. Between the randomisation, gunplay and unique setting, however, the comparisons stop around there. The world itself is horribly joyful. It's packed with fun little nooks and details. The post-apocalyptic landscapes bristle with creatively-designed baddies with lots of spindly tentacles, lots of glowing bits, lots of appendages that can explode and/or spurt blood before you finally get them down for the count. Switch owners have had to wait a little while for this one, but the wait does come with a pretty major perk - this version comes with the Swamps of Corsus and Subject 2923 DLCs, bringing new environments, gear, quests and even a new gameplay mode into the mix! If the end of the world feels like an appropriate place to hang out, why not shoot some root?
