In 18th Century Barvaria, a small village's livelihood depends upon the local glass factory and the special ruby glass which it produces. When the man who discovered the formula for the ruby glass dies without passing on his secret, the town becomes desperate, and soon slides towards bankruptcy and hysteria. To create the film's unique atmosphere, director Werner Herzog famously had the cast placed into a hypnotic trance each day before filming began.
