On 29th May, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and a Nepalese Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, became the first climbers to conquer Mount Everest, the highest place on earth and in so doing became heroes across the world. The climb, under the auspices of the British Empire, was led by Colonel John Hunt, a true British gentleman. This programme provides a definitive account of one of the last truly great 20th century explorers and adventurers, for which Edmund Hillary has granted exclusive access to his letters and photographs, and shares deeply personal feelings about the triumphs and tragedies of his life, including the deaths of his wife and daughter in an air crash in 1975.
