The essence of the RPG is turned on its head in Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do To Deserve This?, as you protect an evil overlord's dungeon lair from oncoming heroes. You do this by digging tunnels on a 2D grid, in any given direction or layout that you please. In digging up certain blocks of soil, you create gelatinous blob creatures that serve as the very lowest of evil dungeon life. Through these blobs, you can create bigger and badder monsters to crawl through your underground lair, as they evolve, give birth or otherwise act as food for already-birthed creatures. Stabilising and nurturing this fragile eco-system is the only way you can provide enough protection for the cowardly evil ruler that stands within, barking orders at every turn. After a certain amount of time, waves of heroes - with each of their names and dialogue in-jokes referencing other popular anime, games or pop culture - will enter your dungeon, attempting to reach the evil overlord and save the world. Before each wave you have a certain number of 'steps' that are used up every time you dig through blocks using a pickaxe. For each wave cleared, you get more steps added to improve your dungeon lair. These steps are also used to level up your creatures and make them more powerful against heroes with swords and shields, adding a strategy RPG element to the mix.
