Description

Classic Japanese period drama, set during the feudal Tokugawa era of eighteenth century Japan. In a downtrodden suburb of Tokyo, masterless samurai and lowly manual workers live side-by-side in poverty. Shinza (Kanemon Nakamura), a barber, rashly decides to lift himself out of poverty by kidnapping the daughter of a prominent merchant, hiding the child at the house of Matajuro (Chojuro Kawarasaki), a masterless samurai. The plan quickly goes awry when Matajuro's wife discovers his part in it and is unable to handle the disgrace his actions have brought on their name.
