Reconstruction of the murders by a peasant farmer's son of his mother, sister and brother in 19th-century Normandy. Originally claiming their deaths were 'God's judgement', Riviere later wrote his confessional memoirs in jail before being executed. Using local villagers to reconstruct the events, the film melds re-enactment, documentary and psychological study, attempting to highlight the similarities that exist between Normandy then and now.
