Often when people think of America, the image of the roadside motel with bright, audacious neon lighting invariably comes to mind. The 50s, a decade immortalised by the classic cult movie American Graffiti, was perhaps the pinnacle of this fabulous indulgence. But much of what people associate with this particular slice of American life is now in steady decline.
