Doom goes medieval. Sure, it was always kind of medieval. But Doom: The Dark Ages is really for-real medieval, chucking you into a seething world of castles and sorcery but, yes, giant robots and balls of raging plasma too. Why not? But while setting a Doom game in the dark ages is cool on its own terms, what's really cool is the change of play style that comes with it. id Software has rolled the series back to an earlier mode of play, making you heavier, harder and more powerful. Less of the wild, careening run-and-gunning and more of what you might call charging. Things are more ground level and you're more of a tank, soaking up and dealing out hardcore levels of damage. One big addition is the shield. It can be used defensively, of course, and it has a devastating parry if you can time it right. It can also be used for a shield charge, which has you locking onto something on the other side of the map and flinging yourself across it to annihilate the target with a bash. Or there's the Captain America style fling, which can serve up damage but also explode overheated metal, be it in the environment or on an enemy. This is all part of Doom: The Dark Ages' tactical element--different enemies require different types of attack, and deciding whether to, say, unload your stamina into a blow that will take them down, or to thin out other enemies before you get to them, etc etc. So you're a tank, but you're a fast, thoughtful tank. And you are extremely, intensely, HEAVY METAL.
