IGCSE English - Ian Barr

A core English text providing practice of the skills needed for the IGCSE English as a First Language syllabus (0500). Approved by UCLES, it contains explanations backed by analyzed examples, and should be suitable for students taking any first-level secondary English course.

Two chapters outline the fundamental skills required to become a better reader and writer, and four other chapters look in detail at how these general skills are applied to particular types of task during preparation for the exam and in the papers themselves. The final chapter outlines and practises the skills needed for the speaking and listening component of the syllabus.

Particular attention is given to the writing of summaries, which has its own chapter, as do the skills needed for successful writing of essays and coursework assignments. The text also features simple guidelines, advice from experienced examiners, and extensive use of examples taken from candidates' work throughout.
