The true story of how a white couple living in 1970s Britain adopted two black children of a women suffering from a severe mental illness (a common practice). But Nathalie and Tom went further. They wanted their adopted children to remain connected to their birth family and grow up with a pride in their heritage. Today, open adoptions are becoming more usual - but in the 70s, Tom and Nathalie were breaking new ground. Neither they, their advisors nor the law foresaw where this approach would lead - how it would affect children, birth family and adoption.
