Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brings the action back to where the series really kicked into high gear with a soft reboot. Both the name and many of the characters from 2007's monster hit are back, but they come with a whole new story and the benefits of over a decade of lessons learned in multiplayer game design. The campaign follows Captain Price as he attempts to intervene in a civil war. Things quickly spin out of control, however, and before you know it there are chemical weapons in the wild and things are looking really grizzly. Infinity Ward is promising four major branching pathways, meaning that your decisions can have a serious impact on what happens. There's a stronger emphasis on realism this time out, and as well as colouring the story in varying shades of grey (and red) that plays out in the removal of the HUD. In multiplayer doors can be breached for ambushes now, and nighttime maps have been changed up with a new version of night vision goggles. In a surprising twist on the Call of Duty formula, Infinity Ward has also introduced a new mode called Gunfight. It pulls back from the exponentially increasing multiplayer numbers from the Battle Royale genre and instead pits teams of two against each other in incredibly close quarters. Although it allows for a bit of sneaking around, it's really designed to be fast and furious. To get things going quickly you're just given a game-selected loadout, you sometimes spawn so close to the other players that you can make out their nose hair and if there hasn't been a kill within 40 seconds the rules change to force you towards a flag. It's intense stuff and won't be for the faint of heart. Still, Infinity Ward certainly hasn't ignored large scale battles and Ground War, while not a battle royale, does boast 100-strong match sizes. This is a whole new (modern) era for Call of Duty, with Infinity Ward getting back to its roots.
