Mary Madec was born and raised in the west of Ireland. She was educated at NUI, Galway and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She currently directs the Villanova University Centre at NUI, Galway. She has published poetry various literary journals, including Cranng, West 47, The Cirt Annual, Poetry Ireland Review, the SHOp, The Sunday Tribune, and in the UK in Iota and forthcoming in Nth Position. She was a featured reader at Over the Edge in November 2005, and at the Cirt Over the Edge Showcase in 2008. In the last year she has received awards and accolades for her work in the Raftery and Maria Edgeworth competitions and the WINDOWS showcase and anthology. In April 2009 she won the prestigious Hennessy Award for Emerging Poetry. In 2008 she started up a community-writing project, Away with Words, for people with intellectual disabilities. This is her debut collection.
