Russian director Sergei Eisenstein intended to make a trilogy detailing the life of the notorious 16th Century Tsar Ivan IV, but only completed the first two parts before his death in 1950. In Part Two, Ivan (Nikolai Cherkassov) continues his bloody struggle with the Boyars and the Church. Stalin, initially a supporter of the project, objected to Eisenstein's depiction of the Russian leader in the second part, and the film was not released until 1958.
