Two films from cult independent director Jim Jarmusch. In 'Down By Law' (1986), convicts Zack (Tom Waits) and Jack (John Lurie) are constantly at each other's throats as they do time together in a New Orleans prison. But then Roberto (Roberto Begnini), an Italian who speaks non-stop fractured English, joins them in their cell and becomes the object of their mutual disdain. Nevertheless, it is Roberto who brings them together long enough to organise a jailbreak, and the eccentric trio go on the run. 'Night on Earth' (1991), tells five separate stories which all happen on the same night in five different taxis driving through five cities around the world: a Hollywood casting agent feels her age in L.A. while being driven by a young female cab driver (Winona Ryder); a learner cabbie, who is a former circus clown, drives through Harlem carrying two arguing passengers; a blind woman (Beatrice Dalle) disorientates her driver in Paris; a non-believer (Roberto Benigni) finds a dead bishop in his back seat in Rome; and a driver in Helsinki and his passengers swap melancholy stories.
