She is author of four biographies of women writers:Elizabeth Bowen(1977);Edith Sitwell: A Unicorn Among Lions(which won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, 1981); Vita, a life of Vita Sackville-West (join winner of the Whitbread Award for the best biography, 1983); andRebecca West(1987).Trolloperepresents a new departure in that this is the first time she has written the life of a man.
Her novel,The Grown-Ups, was published in 1989. She writes reviews and articles forThe Times, theTelegraphand other periodicals, and lives in London and West Cork.
