For ten years Katherine, her husband Johnny and their great friends Beth and Patrick have been contributing to a 'millenium' fund, to ensure they see in the new millenium with the greatest of style and fanfare. But during the summer of 1999, as the big party they've been planning for so long looms, the pressure gets too much for all of them, and cracks begin to show in friendships, marriages and family life. Now in their mid-thirties, half way through their lives as the new millenium begins, they find it all too tempting to look at the past, at the unsatisfactory present, and most frighteningly of all, at the future which, until now, has always seemed light years away...
