At a glance, CYGNI: All Guns Blazing looks like a very polished retread of the very well-worn schmup arcade shooter genre. It is, indeed, very polished, but it's very much not a retread of the same old formula. Rather, it subtly reinvents it, inviting in new players and giving veterans new ways to play. Most strikingly, CYGNI makes you much beefier than your standard arcade shooter. Rather than exploding after the merest glancing hit, you're a veritable bullet sponge, giving the average player much more longevity than usual. It's also oriented in the 'vertizontal' style, meaning that you scroll upward but you have the full width of your screen to play with. This opens up a lot more screen real estate than a traditional schmup, offering up new lines of attack as you go. Meanwhile, a twin stick control setup allows you to point your guns left and right to increase your coverage and dominate more of the screen. And the hail of power-ups in certain modes means that CYGNI can be about managing your resources rather than bullet ballet. Still, if you are looking for something seriously chewy, harder difficulty modes really ratchet up the challenge and give you something to sink your teeth into. Visually, CYGNI has all the production values of a AAA offering. It looks lush, and below your finely-realised airborne battles, the fight on the ground is chock full of detail, too. If you don't normally think of yourself as a schmup player, CYGNI is still worth a second glance. And if you do, it turns much of what you love about the genre on its head in a thrilling way.
