It's not often that auteurs get to create a true epic, but after decades making hit Metal Gear Solid game after hit Metal Gear Solid game, Hideo Kojima definitely earned his shot with the first Death Stranding game. It was a strange, haunting sci-fi epic that pondered over the nature of death, connection and mortality. With this sequel, On the Beach, Kojima returns with more of the same existential weirdness and adds even more layers to the onion. Things pick up 11 months after the first game with courier Sam (Norman Reedus) having successfully connected America to the chiral network and gone into hiding. Deliveries are now taken care of by the Automated Porter Assistant System (APAS), meaning that Sam's out of work, but that's fine. He now leads a comfortable, happy life with his adopted daughter and all is well. Until Fragile (Lea Seydoux) returns with another mission, this time on behalf of her new company Drawbridge, to connect Mexico to the network. From there things move to the Australian outback, and... well, that's enough story. You're better off experiencing it for yourself. What follows is another melancholic, beguiling science fictional journey across a surreal landscape. Gameplay very much builds on the first game, with Sam making dangerous deliveries across difficult environments for social media likes, stacking loads and using momentum in carefully balanced puzzles. But it adds to the formula, creating additional layers of complexity and offering more opportunities for asynchronous connection. The environments are more diverse, while new elements such as flashy new kit and vehicle combat expand what you can do. For all that, though, as with the first game, if you show up for Death Stranding 2, it will be so you can glimpse the eerie mindscape of one of gaming's true visionary creators.
