1955 Japanese drama from acclaimed director Kon Ichikawa. Based on the novel of the same name by Natsume Soseki, this is a study of tainted love, failed friendship, secrecy and isolation. Shizu (Michiyo Aratama) cannot understand why her husband Nobuchi (Masayuki Mori) continually visits the grave of his friend Kaji (Tatsuya Mihashi). Nor can she understand his relationship with a young student, Hioki (Shoji Yasui). Set around the time of the death of the Emperor and the end of the Meiji Era in 1912, the threads of the drama are skilfully woven by Ichikawa.
