The nation of Liberia at 171 years old is the oldest republic of Africa, but despite its early founding, wealth of resources, diverse peoples, enviable location and international relationships, it remains one of the least developed countries, languishing at the bottom of the world's development ladder. Lamenting Liberia explores the path that this nation took from her founding in 1822, through social and cultural devastation, divisive and brutal wars, and her emergence into a period of hope and expectations. In his wail of grief over lost opportunities, prevailing echoes of corruption and divisiveness, and poverty that threatens the survival of the nation, Simeon M-B Moribah calls on all peoples to reflect on their responsibilities to the current plight of Liberia.
