Description

A typically madcap comedy from the masterful duo, Laurel and Hardy - expect Mother Goose, Bo-Peep and the Three Little Pigs, plus a mix-up with Father Christmas - 'Babes in Toyland' became a seasonal classic following its release in 1934. Based on the Victor Hugo operetta of the same name, its soundtrack included a number of key songs from the original stage production, even if the film took artistic liberty with the script. Cue the main overture - a playful piece of bombast that perfectly lifts the curtain on this fantasyland caper, and the scene-setting Toyland, sung by Virginia Karns, in her role as Mother Goose. The movie's epic finale, set to 'March of the Toys', sees a phalanx of wooden soldiers save the day... before a typically hilarious accident reminds us why Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy remain unparalleled as masters of their craft. It would be another fine mess if it weren't so great.
