Olivier Assayas ('Irma Vep', 'L'Eau froide') directs this epic tale of family and business intrigues set in the early years of the 20th century. Fleeing the wreckage of his marriage to Natalie (Isabelle Huppert) and his failed vocation as a clergyman, Jean Barnery (Charles Berling) meets and marries Pauline Pommerel (Emmanuelle Béart). The pair lead a happy and secluded life in Switzerland until the request comes that Jean take over the leadership of his family's porcelain manufacturing company in Limoges. Jean accepts, returns home, and begins making the decisions necessary to deal with the influx of cheaper goods produced with modern manufacturing methods, the outbreak of the First World War, and the economic disaster of the Wall Street Crash.
