Baltimore, 1954. Jewish teenager Ben (Ben Foster) has fallen for Sylvia (Rebekah Johnson), a black girl at his school, but they face opposition from both of their families. Meanwhile, Ben's brother Van (Adrien Brody) is pursuing rich WASP Dubbie (Carolyn Murphy) and his racketeer father Nate (Joe Mantegna) faces a federal investigation of his numbers game. Following Diner (1982), Tin Men (1987), and Avalon (1990), this is director Barry Levinson's fourth film exploring Jewish life in post-war Baltimore.
