On a cold January night in 1316, Welsh nobleman Llywelyn Bren and his followers attacked Caerffili castle, and sparked off one of the most serious Welsh revolts since the loss of Welsh independence in 1283. His men swept across Glamorgan and Gwent, sacking castles and destroying the seats of English power. Throughout the winter and into the spring, rumours abounded that the Welsh were ready to join forces with the Irish and Scots and form a pan-Celtic alliance, and that Wales would even regain its lost independence. Yet this remarkable occurrence remains largely unknown to the Welsh public.
In this, the first book-length study of Llywelyn Bren and his revolt, the events of his life and the revolt are recounted - his birth into the dispossessed Welsh royal house of Senghennydd, his audacious raids on towns from Newport to Neath, and his selfelss surrender, and ultimate betrayal.
